Gender neutral and eco-conscious brand PANGAIA, experts in sustainable clothing for all, has opened its first pop-up at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. Driven by compassion and cutting-edge science, PANGAIA specializes in creating simple garments for everyday wear.

With the recent opening of its brick-and-mortar store in Asia, the essential clothing brand sees itself more as a collective and part of the human family, so its expansion into the region should come as no surprise to lovers of the forward-thinking label.

We spoke to the PANGAIA collective about the brand’s journey since its inception and how they plan to take fashion into a more progressive future.

Bringing us back to the beginning, what was the trigger for the idea of creating PANGAIA?

We partner with the world’s leading research institutions, laboratories and scientists to bring to life the latest problem-solving innovations in materials science. With PANGAIA, we wanted to find a way to demystify science and make it accessible to industry and the end consumer in the most accessible way possible – through everyday lifestyle products, starting with essential clothing. We’ve pioneered our own groundbreaking patents like FLWRDWN floral down, use bio-based fibers as well as materials made from plant and fruit fibres, recycled clothing waste and much more.

What distinguishes PANGAIA from the other sustainable brands in the industry?

At its core, PANGAIA focuses on the science, not the sustainability hype. At PANGAIA we have an in-house R&D team of scientists and an impact team of environmental and social scientists. In many ways, we function more like a tech company, manifesting our research into fashion and apparel. We choose to use our expertise to work holistically to shape an earth-friendly future, and we seek to communicate this to our customers through transparency in our practices and making our science accessible through our product information and social platforms.

The science and technology we work on has the potential to move the entire industry toward more responsible materials and practices. While we are far from perfect, our goal is to simultaneously work on and improve all aspects of an earth positive future and set a new standard. We also share our material innovations and blueprints impacting many industries to drive the adoption of more responsible production and consumption on a global scale. This is in stark contrast to the “exclusivity” you see as a focus in many areas of fashion.

Your technology is definitely unique. Are you planning to share your innovation with other companies in the future?

We want to improve access to sustainable materials and increase their demand. To achieve this, we can’t value our innovations – and that’s why we open source our technologies for other brands to access. PANGAIA is both a direct-to-consumer materials science company and a B2B platform called PANGAIA Science, bringing breakthrough textile innovations and patents to the world through essential products and partnerships. Our PANGAIA Science offering offers companies, innovators, brands and suppliers opportunities to collaborate with PANGAIA in the transition to a more sustainable fashion industry through the adoption of innovative materials and processes.

With all the benefits of making clothing from all-natural materials, are there any production challenges you face?

Being first in any field is never easy. Being a pioneer means stepping away from the crowd and doing something different and bespoke. We work with the most advanced scientists, researchers and technologists in their fields – from fibers to packaging – and with forward-thinking factories and manufacturers in Europe. We always prioritize and invest in achieving the highest quality, ethical standards and the latest innovations.

Do you think there will ever be a time when the entire fashion industry will go down the sustainable path?

There is much to be done to make the fashion industry more responsible, both from an ethical and environmental point of view – from working conditions to moving away from environmentally harmful and towards regenerative materials. At PANGAIA, we have chosen to work holistically to create a better future – while we are far from perfect, our goal is to improve all these aspects simultaneously and set a new standard. We also share our material innovations and blueprints with many industries to advocate for the adoption of more responsible production and consumption on a global scale.

They’ve recently started to venture beyond e-commerce. With the launch of PANGAIA in Hong Kong’s Lane Crawford, where else do you plan to expand the label’s presence?

In the near future, PANGAIA’s presence in Hong Kong will be expanded to Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing. Additionally, we have similar plans in the US and across Europe throughout 2022 and beyond.

As a collective, what do you ultimately hope to achieve with PANGAIA?

Our ultimate goal is to build an environmentally friendly company – one that gives back more than it takes. We also want to show other companies a way forward so that innovations can spread further. The balance is in bringing cutting-edge materials science to our consumers at a price they can afford, knowing that this will ultimately drive scale and lower costs across the industry, making sustainable innovation the norm, not the exception.

What can we expect from you in 2022?

We focus on developing and bringing game-changing textile and material innovations and patents to the world through everyday lifestyle products, and it doesn’t stop with apparel. Each of our products is made for a reason and driven by material innovation. While we are unable to release specific details at this time, we will continue to diversify into new categories and verticals over the coming year.
