Jitendra Singh offers seed funding to potential leather startups and entrepreneurs


Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh urged students to look for lucrative careers in the burgeoning leather start-up ecosystem and also offered seed funding from the Technology Development Board to potential start-ups and innovative entrepreneurs Ministry of Science and Technology.

Speaking to senior academics and officials from CSIR-CLRI (Central Leather Research Institute), Kanpur and college students at Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, Singh said India’s leather industry offers world-class opportunities for startups and entrepreneurship. He further said that the leather industry in India has consistently shown high export earnings and is one of the top ten foreign exchange earners in the country.

He said that CSIR-CLRI (Central Leather Research Institute), Kanpur will be instructed to organize specific activities such as leather and related industries survey, hands-on demonstrations, trade consultation, professional and tailor-made training programs, consulting services and student internships on a regular basis to promote leather startups and companies.

Singh highlighted that India is the second largest producer of footwear, the second largest exporter of leather garments, the fifth largest exporter of leather goods and the third largest exporter of saddlery and harness. He said that the size of the global leather goods market is estimated at US$424 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach US$744 billion by 2030, adding that India needs to unlock the huge potential in the global leather pie.

Abhinandan Kumar, Scientist in Charge, gave a presentation on the status of Kanpur Leather Cluster and the activities of CLRI Kanpur Regional Center and introduced various technologies available with CLRI to reduce pollution and add value to leather manufacturing and industry Achievement of environmental requirements and support for a better realization of the assessed value would help.
