Australia’s concrete cowboys are in an uproar over RM Williams price hike
RM Williams is an Australian institution with its iconic work boots worn by everyone from stockman to stockbroker. But as the cost of living continues to skyrocket, the famous shoe brand has just announced a substantial price hike…
The South Australian company, recently bought by billionaire mining magnate Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest and his wife Nicola, has raised the price of its flagship Comfort Craftsman with wellies to AU$649. That certainly frustrates more than a few “concrete cowboys”.
Previously, Comfort Craftsman boots sold for AU$595 – already a lot of money to spend on boots – meaning the new price represents a price increase of around 9%.
“Like any company, RM Williams regularly reviews pricing and adjusts it as necessary for exchange rate pressures, the rate of inflation, increasing costs of high-value raw materials, manufacturing and transportation,” said Paul Grossman, CEO of RM Williams The Australian. He continued:
“It should be noted that we employ more Australians than ever and will continue to build on that commitment by doubling our commitment to onshore manufacturing… Every pair of boots is handcrafted in our Adelaide workshop, just as they always have been are and will always be.”

Many of RM Williams’ cheaper products (although all is relative), such as most clothing, accessories, sneakers and hats, are no longer made in Australia but in China and Southeast Asia. However, the Forrests have announced their intention to produce the brand 100% in Australia again.

Before the Forrests bought the brand and brought it back to Australian ownership in 2020, it was majority-owned by French luxury conglomerate LVMH, with Australian actor and huge RM Williams fan Hugh Jackman also reportedly owning a fairly sizable stake in the brand.
We suspect RM isn’t immune to inflation and the rising cost of living… But we’d argue that for some Aussie gentlemen, their RMs are essential items.
